Skokomish Tribal Partnerships

Dancing at potlatch

At Hood Canal School District, we are proud of our deep and ongoing partnership with the Skokomish Tribe. This collaboration is essential in providing a rich and supportive educational experience for our Native students. Here are some of the key initiatives and activities we have undertaken together:

Cultural Integration and Enrichment

We are committed to honoring and integrating the rich cultural heritage of the Skokomish Tribe into our school programs and activities. This year, the Tribe worked with us to organize three assemblies focused on Skokomish history and culture, ensuring that our Native students see their identities reflected and celebrated in their education. Additionally, our collaboration includes support for guest speakers and presenters who bring invaluable knowledge and perspectives to our students, enriching their educational experience. We are also grateful for the tribal members who provide opening songs for many of our assemblies and events, creating a meaningful and respectful atmosphere.

We are excited about our new project together, which provides training on the Since Time Immemorial curriculum and customizes it to reflect local Skokomish history and culture. Together, we are contracting with an outside consultant to facilitate this work and collaborating with the Office of Native Education (ONE) at OSPI to ensure the curriculum is both comprehensive and culturally relevant.

Community Engagement and Communication

Our partnership was highlighted during our huge Earth Day celebration and educational event at Potlatch State Park, where students learned about environmental stewardship in the context of tribal knowledge and practices.

We recognized the need to improve communication with all stakeholders, particularly our tribal families. Our newly formed Tribal Parents Group, along with the monthly meetings of our Indian Parent Committee, has been instrumental in supporting school functions and raising funds. These groups ensure that the voices of tribal families are heard and their needs are met.

Despite the school bond not passing, we made significant efforts to communicate its importance to the community, including our tribal partners. Informational meetings and outreach were key components of this initiative, and the increased voter turnout reflected our shared commitment to the district’s future.

Collaborative Leadership and Safety

We maintain a strong line of communication with the Skokomish Tribe through monthly meetings between the Hood Canal and Skokomish executive teams. These meetings help us coordinate efforts, address mutual concerns, and strengthen our relationship. We also engage in shared problem-solving to tackle common challenges.

The land our school is on was generously donated by tribal families in the 1960s, a testament to our long-standing partnership. We honor the sovereignty of the Skokomish Nation and deeply value our ongoing collaboration. Our school also benefits from the support of the Skokomish Tribal Police, who play a crucial role in ensuring the safety and security of our students and staff.

Supporting Student Success

Attendance is a key priority, and we are working closely with tribal families to address any barriers. Our weekly attendance team, in collaboration with tribal representatives, has led to significant improvements in student attendance. Additionally, we support tribal tutors working in our school, ensuring that Native students receive the help they need to succeed.

We work hand-in-hand with the Tribe's Head Start preschool to coordinate services for students with disabilities, ensuring they receive the best possible support and resources. We also facilitate transition activities for Head Start students, including spring site visits and our new summer kindergarten jumpstart program.

Looking Forward

The success of Hood Canal School District relies on authentic partnerships with parents, taxpayers, and local businesses. Our children deserve the best education we can provide, equipping them with academic skills to pursue their career dreams, become productive citizens, and lead rich, joyful lives. Together, with the support of the Skokomish Tribe, we are transforming Hood Canal from a good school to a great school.

This is not an exhaustive list, but examples of our work together. For more information or to get involved, please contact the school district office or our superintendent's office. Thank you for your continued support.
