Community
While emergencies are rare, it’s crucial that we are ready to respond quickly, safely, and in an organized manner. No matter the situation, our priority is the safety and well-being of our students. We follow these three key procedures to maintain a secure environment:
Supervision: Students are always under the care and supervision of Hood Canal staff.
Information Management: All emergency information is managed and communicated through our main office staff.
Evacuation Protocol: If evacuation becomes necessary, students must be checked out through our front office staff. A safe, designated student pick-up location will be established in the event of an evacuation.
Emergency Response Plan
The district follows best practices in case of an emergency. For complete details please refer to our District Emergency Response Plan.
Major Emergency Situations
While it’s impossible to predict every emergency, our school has established procedures for several major situations, including:
Fire and Fire Alarms
Earthquake/Structural Damage
Lockdown
Cushman Dam Evacuation
Shelter in Place
Active Shooter Response
Drills and Preparedness
To ensure everyone is prepared, we conduct monthly drills, treating each one as if it were a real emergency. Teachers review procedures and exit routes with students before each practice session, ensuring familiarity and confidence in what to do.
Student Safety Measures
While we take every possible step to ensure student safety, there are actions students can take to help protect themselves:
Always stay in supervised areas while on campus.
If leaving during the school day, be sure to sign out at the office.
Report any suspicious or unauthorized activity on campus to a staff member immediately. Remember: If you see something, say something.
Emergency Schedules and Inclement Weather
Occasionally, weather conditions or other circumstances may require changes to our regular school schedule. Please be aware of the following policies:
School Closures: School will be closed for the entire day, and all activities will be canceled.
Delayed Start: School will begin later than usual. Bus routes will also be delayed and may experience slight delays at the end of the route.
Limited Transportation: In cases where certain roads become inaccessible, limited transportation routes will be in effect.
Communication During Emergencies
In the event of an emergency, we will communicate through multiple channels, including email, text message, phone calls, our mobile app, the school website, and Facebook. In case of a power outage, please tune in to your local radio or news station for updates.
Emergency Contact Information
Emergencies can occur without warning. It’s vital that we have current contact information for all students. Some emergencies may require an early dismissal, with students being bused home. Updated contact information ensures we can reach you promptly. Please make alternate plans in advance, as phone lines may not always be available for student calls during such situations.
