The Hood Canal School Highly Capable Program

Our Program

Hood Canal School offers a Highly Capable Program for students in grades K-8. This program is designed to meet the needs of students who perform or show potential for performing at significantly advanced academic levels compared to their peers. Each winter, all grade 2 and grade 5 students are universally screened as required by state regulations. Notification will be sent in January for families, staff, and community members to refer students for testing.

Highly Capable Students: Highly Capable students are those who perform or show potential for performing at significantly advanced academic levels when compared with others of their age. These students can be tested to determine if they qualify for additional services designed to challenge and engage them. Our program utilizes enrichment, differentiation, clustering students in one classroom for peer supports, and acceleration.

Referral and Application Process: Applications and information will mailed to all families in winter. If you do not receive this mailing and would like to refer a student, please complete the Referral Form and return it to the school office or email Melanie Lankford. Copies of the Referral Form are also available in the front office. After testing data is available, our identification team works to sift through all of the data we have collected - not only from the Cogat-highly capable testing. Please note that we can not use just one measure to identify a student.

Our Highly Capable Program aims to provide a challenging and enriching educational experience to nurture the talents and abilities of advanced learners. We encourage parents and guardians to consider this opportunity for students who exhibit exceptional academic potential. For more information, please contact Melanie Lankford.
