Hood Canal School District has been honored as one of only six districts in Washington State selected to participate in a prestigious study by the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI). This recognition highlights the district’s exceptional commitment to improving student attendance and engagement through innovative practices and partnerships.
The study, conducted as part of the Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER) Attendance & Reengagement Project, details how Hood Canal developed and strengthened its attendance systems to address student disengagement challenges exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. The district’s efforts showcase a model of leadership, collaboration, and student support that other schools can emulate.
Commitment to Attendance
Hood Canal’s attendance success stems from its districtwide focus, supported by the school board and leadership team. Attendance was identified as one of four district goals, driving comprehensive efforts to improve outcomes. The school implemented a Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) framework, integrating proactive strategies such as monthly attendance challenges, family events, and personalized communication to engage students and families.
Partnerships with the Skokomish Tribe and ESD 113
A cornerstone of the district’s success is its collaboration with the Skokomish Tribe, whose members form a significant part of the school community. Through regular meetings and shared initiatives, the district and Tribe have worked to build trust and strengthen relationships. The Tribe’s support extends to home visits, tutoring, and cultural programming, ensuring students feel valued and connected.
In partnership with Educational Service District (ESD) 113, the district further enhanced its attendance systems. An ESD Reengagement Specialist played a key role in identifying gaps, providing coaching, and delivering direct support to students and families. This collaborative approach has been instrumental in improving attendance rates and fostering a sense of belonging among students.
Impactful Results
Hood Canal’s innovative practices have led to remarkable improvements. The district reduced the percentage of students needing intensive attendance interventions (Tier 3 supports) by more than half—from 27% to 10%. Students reported feeling more connected to their school and expressed increased trust in the staff supporting them. These outcomes reflect the district’s commitment to addressing barriers to attendance, from transportation challenges to fostering a welcoming school culture.
Looking Ahead
As the district continues its journey, it remains focused on sustaining these gains and addressing challenges such as tardiness. By building on its collaborative foundation with the Tribe and community partners, Hood Canal is committed to maintaining its exemplary practices and supporting every student’s success.
